Roulette is the simplest game in the room to play and the easiest to misunderstand. A ball lands in a numbered pocket, bets are paid according to how precisely they named it, and every one of those payouts is slightly smaller than the true odds. That gap is the entire business model, and understanding where it lives makes every other decision at the table straightforward.
Inside and outside
Bets on specific numbers sit inside the layout and pay the most: a single number pays 35 to 1, a split of two pays 17 to 1, a corner of four pays 8 to 1. Bets on broad properties sit outside: red or black, odd or even, high or low each pay 1 to 1, while dozens and columns pay 2 to 1. Nothing in that list is a better bet than another in the long run — they differ in how often they land, not in what they cost.

Read the last two columns together and the mechanism is visible. A straight-up number wins 1 time in 37 but pays as if it were 1 in 36. The missing pocket is the zero, and it is the reason the game has an edge at all.
One zero or two, and why it is the only choice that matters
A single-zero wheel has 37 pockets and a house edge of about 2.70 per cent. A double-zero wheel has 38 and an edge of about 5.26 per cent — nearly twice as expensive for an identical experience. No system, no betting pattern and no amount of study will ever recover a difference of that size, which makes the choice of table the single most consequential decision in roulette. Which wheels are on the site is a question for the lobby, and the pocket count is printed on the layout itself.
Some single-zero tables also carry rules that return or hold half of an even-money bet when the zero lands, which cuts the edge on those bets substantially. Where such a rule exists it is stated in the game information, and it is worth looking for.
Announced bets and the wheel itself
European tables usually carry a second way to bet, aimed at the wheel rather than the layout. Announced or call bets cover groups of numbers that sit next to each other on the wheel — the neighbours of a chosen number, or the traditional French sectors — and they are placed as a package rather than chip by chip. They are a convenience and a piece of table culture, not an edge: covering a sector costs exactly what covering the same numbers individually would cost, because the price of each pocket is unchanged.
This is worth knowing mainly to avoid a misconception. Nothing about the physical arrangement of the wheel gives any pocket a different chance on a fair table, so a sector bet is a way of expressing a hunch quickly rather than a way of exploiting geometry.
What an hour costs
Budget by the hour rather than by the spin. A single-zero wheel keeps about 2.7 per cent of everything staked, so 200 RSD a spin across roughly forty live spins is 8.000 RSD turned over and around 216 RSD of expected cost for the hour. On a double-zero wheel the same session costs closer to 420 RSD for an identical experience, which is the clearest possible argument for checking the pocket count before playing.
What systems actually do
The famous ones all rearrange the same money. A doubling system after a loss wins small amounts often and loses catastrophically on the run that finally arrives, and it hits a table limit or an empty balance long before the arithmetic gets a chance to work. Flat betting loses at a steady, predictable rate. Neither changes the edge, because the edge is applied to each individual spin regardless of what came before.
What a system can do is manage session shape — how long the money lasts and how variance feels. That is a real thing to want, and it is worth being honest that it is what is on offer rather than an angle on the house.
Live and machine versions
A streamed table and a software version of the same wheel have the same maths. The differences are pace and stake range: a machine game plays faster and usually starts lower, while a live table plays slower with a dealer and a clock. Slower is cheaper per hour at the same edge, which is the one practical argument between the two.
Session discipline matters more than any of it. Decide the amount before sitting down, treat the results board as history rather than as data, and remember that a wheel has no memory of the last twelve reds.
